  • Care & feeding after Pod adoption?

I'm going to try pods & see how my luck goes with jetting issues. If I'm not happy I'll go back to stock airbox.

So with that, I'm wondering what I need to do once I remove the airbox & put the pods on. There's a tube from the crankcase that goes into the airbox & one that goes out. Is there something I need to do relating to either of these tubes? Or anything else other than the inevitable jetting issues I'll need to attend to?

    Thanks!

just tuck the 2 smaller ones under the tank or put little filters on them. and on the crank case filter also put a filter on it... dont want no bugs, grime, dirt in there....

As Lee implied, they are vent hoses. The two small ones are carb vent hoses (do NOT plug them!!). The other is a crankcase vent, filter it, re-rout it or turn it down and make it a road oiler, just be sure it can vent or you will need to get good at replacing engine seals.

Are those the original carbs on yours? I have an 82 XJ11 as well and I am pretty sure there are no carb vent lines off my carbs.

It is a Canadian bike so maybe that s the diff?

I don't know if they are the original carbs, haven't gotten to them, will do that tomorrow & if I see those small hoses going to the carbs, I'll not plug them & I will deflect the crankcase vent & will put a filter on it to keep vermin out.

                Great ideas & heads up!

Yeah, later-model carbs ('80+) did not have vent lines. They vented directly to the intake throats into the airbox. XJ's would not have the vent hoses unless the carbs are from an early XS. Easy to tell, if there is a choke lever on the left side of the carbs, they are XS carbs, and if the choke is operated via the handlebar lever and a cable, they are original XJ carbs.

I am pretty sure mine has vent hoses I'll go look later tonight to be sure. But you can tie the 2 together with a single filter and then you can just lean the other one over if you like. I went the cheap route and aimed it out the side.

Yep, the 79's have the vent lines as do the 78's but 80 and later stock don't have those and vent to the bell.

The only hoses connected to the airbox on the XJ11 turned out to be the crankcase breather hose and the outflow hose.

The crankcase vent hose does though meet to form a distribution system inside the airbox where there's an outlet in the velocity tube at the inside of each boot but that's an internal system within the airbox.

Totally different airbox system than in the 82 XJ650 Maxim

                            Rejet>?

                            Hi,
If you do go with pods and eliminate the breather from the intake system, you may want to figure on rejetting. The breather no doubt has some particulate matter in it, although minor, and venting to atmosphere instead of the airbox is going to add slightly to lean running condition that the easy breathing pods will create. Bigger mains may be desired. I basically have a similar setup, and the MNS runs great right to seven thousand rpm, where it seems to just run out of gas. I havnt changed the jets in mine because, I never actually intend to run it that hard, nor do I in fact. My plugs read fine at the lower rpm ranges so I am not concerned with it. I also have non stock muffs on mine which change things slightly also.

Yes indeed, the jetting is something that apparently has to be dealt with. I've been asking and searching for info on what others have found helpful and though I'm still looking, the dynojet Stage 1 kit sounds about right. I would always like a little more power but I don't want to loose MPG. If I can keep stock MPG and have more power available if I wish, that would be ideal. I don't want to burn up the valves or pistons by being too lean either. Need a nice working balance.

I'm looking for a filter to put on the crankcase breather, maybe a clear gasoline filter. I used to have a beautiful paper filter in a glass tube with stainless fittings & nipples on each end designed for a non fuel injected car, made by Purolator but even if I found another one, I'd be concerned the paper would plug from the oil vapors. What might work well would be one of those with a bit of copper brillo pad in it, nothing to flake off and get into the engine & no rusting; it would be a good barrier to bugs and a clear passage for venting and any oil fouling.

Maybe someone has a better & cheaper idea?
