What are the pros and cons of 4 into 1's Vs 4 into2 's.?
I have some time but; I'm on the look out for an exhaust for an SG.
For what some used exhausts are going for (Givin the condition)
When the time comes; I may bite the bullet and get a new set.
Any advantage to a stock set?
I'm interested in what worked and didn't from the XS11 collective.

    Thanks in advance
    Rick

Well good and bad news. Bad news is the only thing you can buy new is the Mac systems. They are nto considered the best quality out there.

Good news is, watch ebay and from time to time a system will come up. Sometimes stock, sometimes Jardine or Kerker even.

4-2 is the stock setup and works best with stock jetting and stock airbox setup.

4-1 gives better performance, but you lose some of the low end performance. Typically, it is used with POD filters. And requires some carb jetting changes

      "Reconditioned" stock exhaust

The exhaust on this SF was in pretty sorry shape.
Headers were badly pitted, collectors rusted and a few small dents and some rust on the muffs.

I spent over twenty hours grinding, filing then sanding just to get them smooth.
      Then fixed the dents etc..
Then painted with some 1200 degree paint.

BTW, after just three/four months I was not happy with them so now it's powder coated.

The OEM 4-2 systems all featured a crossover arrangement which helps with power; this is missing from the aftermarket 4-2 systems. As DG said, a 4-1 will give you a power gain on the top end but at the expense of the lower end.

The original exhaust (particularly on the standard models) is a very well thought-out piece. In terms of the most power at the most points on the 'curve', you can't do any better. Finding a OEM system in decent shape is a problem, although they are out there. For your F, any 'standard' model exhaust '78-80 will fit. Can't find one? Got the remains of yours? Here's the slickest mod IMO I've seen for standard.... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ler+mod&page=2
Looks almost stock, and he retained the crossover.

The 'Special' OEM exhaust will need mods to the bike, pipes, or both to fit your F due to the different angle of the mufflers.

          Useful post

This is a great post re: lots of different exhausts. Most are not available new but it gives you a good idea of what you're looking at.

            Good place to start

For My riding style I would be better served with a stock exhaust.
I will research bringing back a set.
BTW. The pipes are for an SG the one I picked up from Russ.
I have been meaning to change my signature to show this.
I would be helpful to me if someone could tell me which models would also fit an SG. Would a Set from a 3H3 (79 Special I think) fit?

            Thanks

All of the Specials had the same exhaust. The only difference being that the Midnight Specials had their exhaust systems finished in a black chrome.

                  Nice job on the pipes.
Did you encounter much rust through the pipe wall?
What did the powder coat cost?
