            Good news

Thats good news for me. I thought the PO may have done some tinkering or hit something and needed to replace the pan. Finding several odd things as I'm stripping it down and this was one of them.

Please keep track of all the subtle differences as there will be questions from others later.

                Got the disease

Ya Phil, seems I got the XS bug restoring Hermes. Just seems such a shame to let one of these bikes sit and rot away because the PO hasn't the ability to bring them back to life. Just couldn't pass on this one. Not too far gone, just have fix some mistakes the PO made and get rid of the barn rust. Not sure what I'm going to do with the gold though. No one around here does gold plating.

Gold powder coating is actually more durable. Neither one is the "correct" color, but if you do all the parts, no one will notice unless they really know what to look for.

                    Gold plating

Have you done it Bug?. What's involved with the prep for the powder coating. Bead blast all the pieces, sand smooth , then epoxy before paint?

I have not, but ex-member Bigfoot did. Didn't turn out too bad! The nice thing about powdercoating is that it fills in the rough spots, and actually does BETTER when the surface is not glossy smooth. The only issue is that the gold is translucent, so you do have to have the surface clean.

Check locally for 'window tinting' services. Many of these guys offer a 'gold plating' process that applies a 'gold' finish on auto trim, don't see why this wouldn't work for you. You may have to have the parts re-chromed if the plating is damaged badly, but maybe not.

I don't think powdercoating will give the results you're looking for; I've tried some 'chrome' powdercoat and was less than impressed. The finish resembled a polished aluminum surface (with a milky clearcoat) more than anything, and shows scratches worse than 'regular' powdercoat, and much worse than paint. And unlike paint, it's nearly impossible to 'touch-up' or rub out defects in powdercoat.
