Good news
Thats good news for me. I thought the PO may have done some tinkering or hit something and needed to replace the pan. Finding several odd things as I'm stripping it down and this was one of them.mack

had so much fun with the 79 you are doing an 81
Please keep track of all the subtle differences as there will be questions from others later.
Are you coming to the big city for the Toronto Motorcycle show in December?
it would be good to meet up again.

Got the disease
Ya Phil, seems I got the XS bug restoring Hermes. Just seems such a shame to let one of these bikes sit and rot away because the PO hasn't the ability to bring them back to life. Just couldn't pass on this one. Not too far gone, just have fix some mistakes the PO made and get rid of the barn rust. Not sure what I'm going to do with the gold though. No one around here does gold plating.mack

Gold plating
Have you done it Bug?. What's involved with the prep for the powder coating. Bead blast all the pieces, sand smooth , then epoxy before paint?mack

I don't think powdercoating will give the results you're looking for; I've tried some 'chrome' powdercoat and was less than impressed. The finish resembled a polished aluminum surface (with a milky clearcoat) more than anything, and shows scratches worse than 'regular' powdercoat, and much worse than paint. And unlike paint, it's nearly impossible to 'touch-up' or rub out defects in powdercoat.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
