No, ours don't look like that. Our are (at this age) ratty looking plastic that is SUPPOSED to let you see the fluid level without removing the cover (doesn't work 30 years later though).
I understand the 81 Midnight Specials have an alloy unit though, so maybe that's what the sport comes with? (only in bright not black like the Midnight).Cy

thanks cy,
mine has a little plastic window
at the front of the master cylinder,
which over time becomes opaque
and quite useless in the end. lolpete

I just did some work on my new XS850 this weekend, and it reminded me of this thread. The front Master Cylinder on the 850 is the same as the XS11SF. I had a REALLY nasty mess in the reservoir, so listening to the advice here, I was able to lift the reservoir off the base. There is a rubber seal in a groove that seals the reservoir against the Master Cylinder body. Mine is now leaking...
Anyone know what size that seal is? Should I be able to use a round one out of a regular O-ring kit (if so, what size?), or is it a square-sided seal? It's hard to tell since it's been squished in there for so long.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

Try putting a smear of clear silicon on the reservoir base before installing...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
