In the Freezer

I decided to take off my carbs after work today and looks bad. All 4 carb mixture screws are broken and stuck. Number 4[IMG][/IMG]

They are in the freezer cause the wouldnt budge. Any thoughts on using a hand drill to drill them out with a 1/16 bit? Or should I use a drill press?

Drilling them out should be a last resort. It looks as they are sticking thru enough to push/pry them out.

don't do it

Put a little pb blaster in the tops and put the screws back in and freeze them overnight they should pop out easy. Its all in the levereage I use a mechanics pic that's tip is flattened so that you can apply preasure and a big box end wrench for a lever to press down on the pick.

Now I've never dealt with this problem, but it seems to me that a round object just a little smaller than the inside diameter of the carb throat and something to press it against the top might work on these tips like this.

Cool, thanks for the help guys. I will try to get them out in the morning, if not, hand drill with a 1/16 bit it is. The bike ran when they were all plugged, would bogg out when I tried to pop the clutch. Also bogged out at high rpm, top speed was 175km. It also would not idle in warm temprature. Hopefully she runs.

Highly recommend a drill press if you go that route.

Many folks have resorted to drilling them out and the carb will tune still, its just maybe a little more finicky or a different start point or setting than without drilling.

I can't see the pics so I am guessing you are talking about the tips of the mixture screws being stuck. What does freezing the bodies do to help? The aluminum will shrink more than the brass and I would guess this would actually make them tighter.
I have never tackled this problem before so I'm asking and sorry but I don't have any proven suggestions.

Many folks have had great success using the freezer method on broken needles. Drilling them out should be the option right before you decide to through them in the garbage.

Didnt work

Well I tried, stuck the small screwdirver pick in my thumb . Took the carb to the shop today a drilled them out. I cant find any screws here in town, so I used the old ones and put the carbs back on anyway. It was a little hard to start and I asume its because the bowls were empty. After I got it going, same problem, It wont idle. Took it out for a spin and still has a slight studder wide open. Gonna try to play with the screws tomorrow.

Amy yamaha dealer should have them for a few bucks a piece, or get hold of georgefix on ebay to get some screws.

Those BS34-II Mikuni mixture screws are hard to find at a reasonable price. Anyone find a good source, please post it.
