  • It's alive again!

I fired my XS up yesterday for the first time. As best as I can tell it's been 17 years since it was started. I built a simple wiring harness, changed plugs, oil and filter, thoroughly cleaned the carbs, and hooked up a temporary gas tank. It cranked over about twice before starting up. There was an awesome cloud of smoke since I had lubed the cylinders when I first got it home. That soon cleared and it hummed along nicely. Still need air filters and a good carb sync but it's gonna make it. I need to replace the #3 carb body and posted an add in the parts wanted section. All in all a good day!

The mixture screw was seized big time. When I tried to turn it out with an extractor the housing snapped. I epoxied it back together but the threads are all but gone. The other three carbs mixture screws turned out like they were put in the day before, I suspect this one might have been cross threaded before.

Wow! It sat for seventeen years and the motor did not stick.
What did you do prior to putting it away?
Great news tho. Good luck finishing her up.

I didn't put it away. I pushed it out of a buddy's back yard and hauled it home. The front brake was locked up. I sprayed a bunch of PB Blaster in the cylinders for several days before trying to spin it over with the kicker. After running in the driveway and getting good and warm I checked the compression, 150 on 1,3,and 4. #2 was 125. I expect it will even out with some good hard riding. Pretty lucky to be as solid as it is.
