  • Trying to get it started

So i have put the engine back into the bike and reconnected things to the best of my ability but it seems that I have forgotten where the last thing connects to. Its the very long wire coming off from what I believe is the oil level sensor underneath the bike near the oil pan and shift lever. Where does this wire go?!?

Also I installed my brand new YUASA battery and tried to get the bike started, but it wouldn't go. I have gas flowing, but didnt have enough time to check for spark because I had to go to work. While cranking it over, it sounded like at least one was firing, which gives me some hope.

If you know where the wire to the oil level sensor on my XJ goes, please describe as best as you can, or take pictures. Thanks!

I believe that is the Neutral safety switch. The bike has a sensor for whne it is in neutral and on the XJ modle, it will not let it start without it being in neutral I believe.

Check if your getting spark at your plugs, if you are, try switching the wires to the coils if you had them unplugged well, you probably had the wires if not the pickup coils removed. It is not uncommon for someone to swap wires and reverse the timing.

If you look in the tech tips under repairs/ transmission/ at the dremmel fix tip I believe TC has a good pic of the XJ oil sensor in it.

Just to clarify, if the clutch is pulled in the XJ will start in gear if that safety switch (in the clutch lever housing) is working. So it must be in neutral or clutch must be disengaged or no start.

Its definitely the oil level sensor.

As far as spark goes I will have to check that later. On disassembly I didnt remove any of the coils or wires so they should be where they before tear down.

        Thanks for the help.
