Fuel can leak even in the off position if your petcock rubber is worn out. Petcock rebuild kit are available though. From what I know the handle part of the petcock points to the word off when it is in the off position. I switched mine around as this always confused me.2-79 XS1100 SF

Yes Rob, whatever word the handle is covering is the position of the petcock.
Special model petcocks do not operate on vacuum like the standards. I did a write up of the procedure to rebuild a little while back. Prime of course will have the same effect as ON only no mercy from the octopus if it is still in place and functioning.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Yes I did leave the petcocks in the on position but did so thinking the octi was working. Won't do that again and I will have to get into the habit of doing that because it's not necessary or as pointed out even avalable on the standard model.
