  • Any more rubber in my carbs?

Hey guys I am really excited now!!
I got the pilot jets out of the carbs I bought from the bone yard and was able to get the original carbs free from the rack bars then pulled the choke bar out and took out the choke plunger with the rubber around the shaft, now is there any more rubber that I need to remove before dipping them overnight?
Is the butterfly assembly ok to leave in?
next I will try to take the BY carbs off the rack bars.

The BY carbs are all ok so far except one float post was broken and I can fix that ya'll say, so should I fix the post and clean them up and use them or should I use the two bodies that I need to fix the originals that were in much better shape and I know they only have 18000 miles on them?

I went by the Yamaha dealer the other day and WOW the bikes there were awesome, they look like Harleys, I haven't been in a show room in 15 yrs so it was amazing to see what the bikes look liked and then to find out there is a 1600cc.
Now for the plan to buy a new one has already begun with the wife. LOL Baby I want a chopper........naaah I saw these really nice bikes at the dealer today and they would be much safer and comfortable than this XS, and she said well get rid of the old (second) boat and fix that XS then you can go get a new one!!! I almost crapped my drawers.

    Thanks

I don't think you can soak them with the butterflys in, I am pretty sure there is an o-ring around the shaft on either side, never had them apart that far.

Gary is correct.. there is a seal around each side of the carb where the butterfly shaft goes thru.

I removed mine when I soaked them. The screws are peened over on the back side, making it very diffiuclt to remove them. I braced the back side with a length of wood dowel and then used my hand held impact driver to remove them. If you don't support the shaft in some manner, you will probably bend them.

Make sure you use red loc-tite or something simlar when you put them back together. Don't want one coming out when the engine is running.

            hey there!!
do you have to remove the butterfly valves to replace the seals that you mentioned? i'm curently soaking my carbs and wasn't aware that there were seals on the shaft, also are these seals still availible and if not any ideas??

Yes, only way. Once side has a nut on the end of the shaft that would allow replacement without removal, but the other side is peened over and (I think) impossible to remove without destroying the part.

                  hey there!!
                  thanks for the help!!
do you know if there is one or two seals on each carb on the 79 special? the reason i ask is that i looked at an exploded veiw of the carbs on my bike on yamaha's parts web and it only showed one per. carb......would hate to order to many or to few.
                  thanks again!!

2 per carb, one on each end of the throttle shaft.

I am hoping that these seals will come with the carb kit, looking at the kits on e-bay by K&L

"THESE KITS COME WITH ALL GASKETS AND O-RINGS, IDLE MIXTURE SCREW, MAIN AND PILOTS JETS, FLOAT NEEDLE AND SEAT ASSEMBLY"

anyone have any oppinion on these?, anyone with a better sorce? $62-$66

Also I need a sorce for other things like filters, break pads (JC Wihtney?)

                          Thanks
