I did flat with a clear coat over on side covers and case guards and I will do the same to the tank this winter. It comes out as a semi-flat/gloss. Kinda hard to describe.

There ate also flattening agents that can be added to paints or even clearcoats to give you the satin look.Nathan

Thats it, flat black paint (2 or 3 coats) with a semi gloss clear coat (or 5) and it turns into a satin finish. It has held up well.Just ME and my 82 XJ 1100. My opnion is to do your research on painting, and paint it properly. Plati-dip is the biggest half-ass/lazy showmanship of a bike/car I have ever seen! It's not even permanent. It peels off with a quickness, and looks like crap.1979 XS1100F

All I know is, like you said, people use it to paint rims & I really like the satin finish it gives (from the ones I've seen done by a shop here) and from what I was TOLD it is pretty durable, that's why I like it, but like I said, that's just what I was TOLD. I wasn't really sure about it, that's why I asked. I know exactly how to paint it the "right" way, just was asking about a possible new way. I mean, I've seen this shop do a whole entire car with it... (FYI, I'm nowhere near a teenager, I just look like it, lol)
No, if you like the flat black look, you should do it the proper way. It only looks good on certain bikes. I do not think it looks good on the Standards. Something about the rectangle tank, etc., where it looks off. Some of the cruisers look awesome with it.1979 XS1100F
