The Specials do not share petcocks with the standards. The one for the mating surface on the standard is diamond shaped, IIRC.

Do you mean the one to mount it, or the one to seal where the valve goes into the housing?

He has a special, and they are just a round o-ring. Not sure on the size though. You have to be sure you get one that's fuel resistant though.

Ah, OK, the Specials have a simple ring, Yamaha still supply them, it'll be about $3.

When I had a special tank I actually used RTV to seal the petcocks on, worked great! (probably wouldn\'t do it again though)

I have a couple spares I can measure. The ones that come in the kits are not oval they come round.

Nate, RTV won't hold up to gasoline. Wile E. P.O., Soooper Genius! used it for the petcocks on Columbo instead of repairing/replacing them and putting in new o-rings.

Over time the gas seeped out around the petcocks and went under/through the paint. It stripped the paint off the bottom edge of the tank and made a mess that was really hard to clean up, seal and repaint.

                      O-ring

The "gaskets" between tank and petcock are not O-rings, they are oval's, some with dividers to insure screw/fuel seal. Just buy the right "gasket" for your bike/year After all, they are cheap/ adv. and gas leaking down on to a hot motor/exaust

                        Hi Ruffrider,
is that the seal between the petcock and the tank or the seal between the rotating and stationary parts of the petcock?

The O-ring I'm talking about is the one behind the lever that shuts off the gas. I want to get some spares without having to buy the whole rebuild kit

That's not an o-ring. It's a flat rubber valve. There is an o-ring that wraps around the lever itself though. If the flat rubber valve is in need of replacement, I would replace ALL the rubber bits in the rebuild kit.
