    I'm not a fan of the Special forks due to the 'hodge-podge' as you put it...

      The standard is supposed to include somewhat similar steps, but seems on rarely need to actually need any fudging done after the bouncing of the forks unless something else is wrong. The only time I didn't have mine line up with just a couple of bounces, I ended up finding something else out of spec that when fixed put everything else within spec. The standards your only adjusting to make sure that the disks don't rub the caliper brackets, as the calipers are floating and will adjust themselves.

        What's interesting is Yamaha didn't stick with those weird calipers very long. The LH went back to a 'conventional' floating caliper in the front (also used on the RH and Euro 'Sport'; they never saw the 'Special caliper) that was carried over to the XJ, but oddly enough the rear caliper on the LH and XJ is a, you guessed it, pivoting caliper just like the earlier special fronts. It even looks like the same casting, and uses the same pads/seals...
