My XS1100 had a broken carburetor. It has four BS34 carbs, I took carb body from a same year XS650 with BS34 carbs. I swapped all the innards and put it in the bank. It didn't work. Is there any way of telling these apart in a visual examination? What's the difference?

IIRC, all 4 carbs are different in some way fropm each other. #1 has the spot for the choke detent ball. #2 has the vacuum port. #3 &4 point the other direction, and #4 has the spot for the detent ball as well.
Depending on the year/model, the innards are different too, and can be different across the set in the same bike. Some have different jets on 2&3 to run cooler than 1&4, and the emulsion tubes are different in the inner carbs too.
Look at the number of holes on the jets/emulsion tubes, and be sure they are the same. Of course, the sizes of jets may very well be different between the 650 and the 1100.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I swapped the jets and everything else. I used only the body from the XS650. It certainly looks the same. The bike starts and runs great until I open the throttle.
I have since repaired the original carb and I hope to be riding the bike in a day or two. I had the broken post welded by MOTORCYCLECARBS.COM
