  • Stator

Well it's good I have picked up my BDF Special from Big Daddy Funk as my head light and gauge lights are out once again. I have found the problem to be the stator once again. This is my 3rd stator in two riding seasons.

Is there something that could be causing this or is it just rotten luck. I am wondering if the diode in the wiring harness is failing and allowing current flow back towards the stator causing it to short out. Can this happen?

Each time my stator has failed it has only been the headlight and gauges that are affected never the tach. That is why I am suspecting the diode in the wiring harness that is between the stator and the head light relay. I haven't had the chance to test that diode yet.

I hate to burn up another stator any helpful input will be appreciated.

How did the other two fail? Open, shorted? That would give you an idea as to the cause. CZ

If you're buying used stators, I'd say it's bad luck. The 2 things that would kill a stator are high resistance in the connectors causing it to heat up or a wobbling rotor that's hitting it...

I have only used the spare stators from the few engines I have kicking around.
I had thought about the rotor . Each time I noticed just after I really cranked hard on the throttle the head light went was out. It has happened 3 times now but there is no sign of any contact between the stator and rotor. I have checked ,cleaned and used dielectric grease on every connector . So I guess it's just a coincidence I have gone through so many stators or I am hoping anyway.

Try having one of the dead ones rewound and see how it lasts. Custom Rewind in Birmingham, Alabama (800-798-7282) has a good reputation but I have no direct experience with them...

            did use these guys

Hey Tinman - So you did buy the hotrod off of BDF - I wa hoping that but didn't want to pry, congrats man! Hey Believe it or not I did use CUstom Rewind in Alabama for the my stator & rotor rewind job on my xs650 a few years ago before mikesxs made then from brand new. He was great to work with - the shipping was the costly, I guess due to the weight. I shipped Purulator from Cda. I think at that time is was around $200 American for the job not including shipping - but that was awhile ago. I talked to the guy on the phone - he was nice & did an excellent job - never had a problem with all that on the bike since he did it & I put 30k on it before I sold it. Feels good to finally give you some help with all you've done for me - Dan

              Hey Dan ,

I picked up the "Hot Rod" now the "BDF Special" last Saturday and it is more than I expected . I have fixed my head light and the bike is charging fine now. I have a few more stators kicking around so I won't bother getting it rewound. Thanks Geezer ,Dan for that info .
