  • accel coil kit 20-309

    hey there!!
i'm thinking of replacing my stock coils with the accel 20-309 kit, can anyone give me some pointers and info on how they perform on a stock 79 xs1100 special?? any help would be great!!
you guys are great and thanks again for all the advice!!

If accel are similar to dyna, then you'll get a good sharp crackle to your plugs, combustion and ignition system. Great for cold starts and good at high revs.

I got the accels, they work great - from several others I have heard the Dynas work great and are easier to mount. It's not rocket science either way, but sometimes its better to go with the more straighforward path.

Ya, after having a scare after work with the XS11 not starting up right away (first time for that), I decided it was time. I went with the Accels because with the Dynas you have to get the plug wires, caps, etc, seperately:

Hope to have them in a few days...

          coils

i went into the local bike shop asking about ordering dyna coils. They guy there told me that i shouldn't bother replacing them if they're working.

He said, "from over 20 years experience working on motorcycles - trust me. you're not going to see any performance increase from new coils. If it works don't fix it."

I then asked him about cold weather starts, which was my concern - and he said it would make no difference there either.

I think I am short some power at low rpms but I can live with that. But I would like to resolve the problem I had last week riding in the rain (lost a couple cylinders for a few minutes)

anyway - i sure has hell don't have 20 years of experience, but from what I've read and heard - a hotter/colder spark will make a big difference in how an engine runs.

You mention losing cylinders in the rain - perhaps they were either 1&4 or 2&3 which might lead you to suspect coils..but..did you check you pickup wires? Also, is your gasket on that cover good? There are a bunch of us that have had the problem of washing our bikes and the bike not starting until it "dried out"

well just guessing from the way it was running - felt like I lost one cylinder, then about a minute later another went out and that one would come and go at random. They both came back once the rain let up. I figure it was the plug wires not coils. I have been thinking about cutting into the coils to replace the wires per the fix listed on this site. But if I'm going to do that - I'll probalby just replace the coils while I'm at it.

One concern I have is that higher performance coils may put more strain on other components.

Ya, that's kinda what I figured. But I know my coils are suspect (my 2-4 is actually my 1-3 from my parts bike 'cuz my original was way out of spec), as are the wires and caps, so I figure I might as well make sure all is good.

Something is very amiss. She wouldn't start this morning - had to take the damn cage into work - and it's sooo nice out, too. I'll have to have another look at the pickup this weekend.

You may also try checking your plug caps - before I put my new coils on, I replaced my plug caps - at least 2 of them were very mangled.

Of course don't expect an extra 10 h.p. and a 20 m.p.h speed increase with a set of dynacoils. The standard coils work fine - but the dynacoils work better. End of story.

What would really be cool is a MSD ignition box or some other CDI setup. The ones for bikes are horribly overpriced and if you adapt the ones meant for cars, you will need 2 of them. I’ve seen CDI do wonders on cars but I’ve never tried a conversion on a bike.

There is a common myth that XS11’s have CDI stock but all it’s only an electronically switched Kettering ignition system that gives a weaker spark with increasing RPM.
