  • having trouble in the low rpms

this weekend i decided to take the judge out for its first interstate voyage (300 mile). well everything went good on the way there but as soon as i get close to the my final destination it starts to pop, backfire, wont alow my rev past 4-5 grand and sounds like the cylinders are cutting in and out. i fell like im on a harley cause i have to rev the hell out of it at every stop light and rev up way to high to start moving and then it starts popping backfiring and cylinders start to cut out.any suggestions

          when did it start

Had this happen to me last week. Got some gas and rode about 10 miles and it started to do the same thing. Wound up having to drain the tank and carbs and put fresh gas in. Cleared right up.

on the trip i always made 50mile ride before i stop and got gas which lefts me about half a tank. yes i still got my octy. i trimmed the coil wires about a 1/4". still doing the same thing...it seems likes its missing like crazy when im in low gear and the the cylinders are cutting in and out.

Do you mean that you trimmed your spark-plug wires? The pick up coil wires are under the timing cover on the left side of the engine. They flex when the vacuum advance operates, and they're prone to breaking.

If it's making lots of noise at idle, make sure it's hose is hooked to the carb body and not the carb boot, as that will not only cause other performance problem, it will greatly increase the wear and tear on the pickup coil wires and increases the likelyhood of that being the problem.

Ok, to cover this again, there should NOT be any clacking coming from the advance system at idle, if there is, there is something wrong. If the vacuum advance it bouncing up and down (actual significant movement) at idle, that's BAD, check the hose for proper connection.

The hose form the vac advance that is under the timing cover should go up to the nipple on the carb body of the #2 carb. It is the only carb with a nipple on the body. It does NOT go to the nipple on the black rubber boot for #2 carb. That is only used for synchronizing the carbs, and for operating the Octy or the petcock on the standard models.

+1 on the carb body. It seems we are seeing more and more people having that problem, with the vacuum advance hooked to the carb holder instead of the carb. Please check folks, you do NOT want direct manifold vacuum applied to the vacuum advance, only the ported vacuum from the port on the number 2 carb body. It probably won't damage the advance unit, but it's likely to break pickup wires and it will certainly make the engine run in a less than optimal fashion at lower RPM's because it will be bouncing between way too advanced and where it's suppose to be. I'm pretty sure that vacuum port on the carb never gets full manifold vacuum.

Look at the picture in post #22, that is where the vacuum advance hose hooks up to on the #2 carb body.
