    Front tire spin

    I have noticed that the hadeling of my XS gets a little funny feeling sometimes. So yesterday I jaked up the front and tried to see is anything was loose. Every thing seemed tight, I grabbed the tire and moved it up, down sid to side and nothing seemed loose. However I gave the wheel a spin and it hardly made a full rotation. I checked the calipers and there is light visible on either side of the rotors so their not rubbing. So I am guessing maybe I need to regrease the axle perhaps? Any tips are appreciated.

    When is the last time you had the front wheel off? I suggest removing it and reinstalling it per the manual... how many miles are on it, maybe you need new bearings.

      I have never had the tire off, I just got it this spring. The speedo says 6700 miles, but it looks newer than the tach so it could have been replaced. I was wondering if there was a bearing or something in there. I do feel a vibration in the hanlebars at lower speed but when I give it throttle it dissapears. Thats why I originaly jacked it up to see if there was any play in the wheel. So the bearing could be bad abd yet still be tight?

        (Oh boy, here goes, just can't wait to see who slams on this one) You have two disc's being contacted by 4 pads all the time, ever so lightly when breaks are not applied, but still contacting them. If everything turns smoothly and you don;t feel much resistance when you move by hand, you are prob fine. If you think the resistance is too high, check both side's of pads to see if one is more worn then the other, you might have a caliper piston hanging up

          Sorry, my last post got sent before I read your new one. Can you tell me more about this vibration? Most bearings don't cause that till they are realy bad I would think your spin/shake test of the front wheel would have shown that kind of ware

            Kind of hard to explain the vibration, it is sort of a feel and sound. I guess it is more of a grinding feel, thats why I was worried about it being the bearing. The drive also came to mind but I checked the middle and final and the levels were fine. So I guess a grinding would be a better description.

              Grinding

              If you are hearing a grinding and feeling it in the handel bars, def. remove the front wheel. I would replace both bearings, not much $ and you will be able to tell if the caplers are hanging as it will be hard to pull the rotors out if they are. Some gear noise is normal from drive train with some slack, lots of gears all hooking up from motor to wheel, but if your front bearings are grinding and you feel it in your hands, I would fix before riding again. If a front bearing locks up (not often) that could be bad

                Yes, take the wheel off and check the bearings. Simply stick your finger into each bearing and turn it; if it's anything other than easy/smooth, it's toast.

                And while a seized front bearing would be very unlikely to stop the wheel, it will chew the crap out of your axle and/or wheel, so be aware...

                  that is correct, a locked up bearing most likely won't stop the wheel but it will tear up the axle and could ruin the wheel, also, a long walk home or ride in the truck + the whole thing could cause an wreck, be safe and good luck
