  • Question about the seat

I have looked all over and con not find a seat. I have a 79 11 special, I just got it a week ago and i dont like the seat that came on it. Where can i go to get a factory seat or is there a place that i can get a custom seat? All the places i have found do not make seats for bikes older than 82-84.

You need to try and find a seat pan for the '79 Special. That is the ONLY YEAR that will bolt up. once you have a pan, any good upholstery shop should be able to put new foam and a cover on it for you.

I am assuming he has the "king/queen" seat that Yamaha Dealers sold back then. It has a LARGE backrest built in for the queen.... You know, the OLD choppers with the high back seats. They will be harder to modify, as the pan/backrest would have to be cut and re-fashioned to a "normal" seat.

If you sit on the bike and look down, the seat pan will be below your butt!

Hmmm, does this make them rare? I have one with the factory cover on it in the shead. The cover is pretty dry and would not last long but the rear seat badge is still on it and the cover is complete so it could be used to have an original looking cover made up.

Replacement covers are no problem; these guys:

... offer new stock pattern covers for just about all the vintage Jap bikes, and you can even get non-stock colors if black is boring The main trick is having a good seat pan and foam, as those aren't available new anymore...

At closer look, it looks more like a 80 and that won't fit the 79 corretly, sorry, was going by what he said it was? I know it is a 79 or newer "specia"l as the STD model didn't have the highrise passenger seat, but I think it is an 80 from pic.

You might ask him for more pic's, If the back has the rise for the tail light it is an 80 or 81, if not it is a 79 special

I dont care I was just pointing out the discrepancy in case the OP was thinking of buying the seat. He would just need to look into it more if that one was of interest to him.
