  • no muffler question

K so my bike was running rich, it would get hot and just bog out and die .....My new (stock) jets came in today and i installed them, bike no longer richens out and dies but it seems to sputter at a constant throttle at any speed .....bike does not hesitate while acelerating but it back fires while off the trhottle and down shifting .....This bike has straight pipes on it (not by me by the previous owner) would installing mufflers solve my problem??

its hard to say but in most cases yes it should help because most engines need some back pressure to run properly. also stock jets are not right for straight pipes. i have pod air filters, accell coils (3 ohms) and wires, mac exaust, i am running 138 main jet, 42.5 pilot jet, 180 air pilot jet, needle is in the middle, and float hight is as close as i can get to 25.7mm, and about 2-2.5 turn out on the pilot screw. i don't know what the stock jet numbers are?

      exaust

I had mac 4 to 2 pipes when I bought my bike, poped and backfired bad! tuned, rebuolt carbs, helped some. Changed to OEM exaust, prob gone, runs great, no pop or backfire anymore. Everthing else has to be right, but the OEM exaust makes it all sing IMHO

I've never tried it, but more than a few pretty knowledgable folks have coe on here trying to figure out how to get these bikes to run decent with open exhaust. I do not know of any that succeeded without putting some kind of baffle in place.

          It's a PITA...

like everyone say's, these bikes need backpresure of some sort.

          this is what i did.

How to make HD pipes work on a xs1100.doc
          http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SV97O793

i still had to bump to bigger jetting.

my stock pilot jet is a 42.5, i'm running 45.0 (2.5 turns out on the needles)
stock main is a 137.5, I'm thinking 2 higher would be about right.(142.5)

BUT!!! that is for my setup.

you may need to adjust from there.

          also see here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=382
          for jetting recomendations.

          good luck

also georgefix(ebay) is the man to get jets from.
very good to deal with and Very reasonable prices.

Most bike problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!

Cool, glad you got it to work that way. 2 1/2 turns on needles? Is that what just ran best or did your tunning make you chose that rich?
