Who makes rings for the XS's. I am going to need some rings most likely. probably ones that are larger sized. Also do I need a gasket on the bottom of the jugs or can I use RTV? I ask because it would be cheaper for me to buy the head gasket and the valve seals separately than it would to get the whole gasket set, unless there is some reason for me to get the whole gasket set?

    TIA

Preferably something cheaper than the $72 Bike Bandit set!

Get the gasket set! It's about $87 on ebay if you look. Rings will COST! I think they are about $50 PER SET from Yamaha! You may be better off looking for a set of used pistons/rings/barrels to put in. Or, just get it running for now and put a big bore kit in this winter!

        Rings?

1st, why do you think you need new rings? Next, why do you think you need oversized rings with stocks pistons? If your cyl's and pistons are within spec. and your rings are not broken, a ball hone and good cleaning of all piston groves and carbon remove should be enough.

If your asking Nate, he'll have to answer.

As for me, the set I bought is going on the shelf along with a set of .25mm oversize pistons for a rebuild in the future should I need it done.

The reason I am getting 1st over is because I am having problems with my rings so I do not know what I am going to find when I get inside. She runs ok and had good compression but dont know till I get in there. If I dont need them I can still file the ends and use them as standard rings not a problem.

Thanks for the link I ordered those rings. Much better price!

Do I need a ball hone or can I get by with a straight stone hone?

I'm confused, Nate (not really an unusual situation, granted). If you have good compression and your bike runs good, what problem are you having with your rings?

I am burning oil like a SOB. I go through about 1.5 quart in 100 miles. So something is wrong. I would much rather have the parts I need in case and then If I dont use them I am sure someone else could use them. I just dont want to pull the head and then have to wait a week to get parts.

Do a leak down test before you tear anything apart that will give you a better idea where your problem might be. If your leaking through your rings you will hear air coming out your crank vent.

If these bikes have them, possibly valve stem seals? Or maybe worn guides? I would think broken and/or worn rings would show weak compression, probably around 90 psi or less.

I have valve stem seal ordered as well. can I buy a bushing to thread into the spark plug hole so that I can hook it up to an air compressor?

Do you mean to pump the cylinder up in order to hold the valve in it's seat (for spring removal and such), or to check compression?
