A rear wheel can of worms

I pulled off the rear wheel to change the tire and decided to change the bearings. I already have the discontinued bearing but need the other one and the seals. Anyone know a good source?

Next, I am replacing my warped (ebay rip-off) rotors with my old stock ones. However, the paint is sort of dodgy and I was thinking of re-painting them when I recalled a friend recently informing me that he has access to a bead blasting cabinet at work if I ever wanted to blast something. Do you think it would hurt the rotors to blast 'em? I would think they would be hard enough but don't know.

Bearing and seals can be had from the local bearing supply store. Bead blasting will NOT hurt the rotor. A carbide drill bit and some holes will also help with wet braking. High temp paint works on the inside of the rotor, as it WILL get hot under a long run on highway 101 or 1 on the coast.

How does a person know if the bearings need changed? mileage on you ride?
Also, those pads you can buy for stripping paint(they look like a scotchbrite pad dipped in plastic) on a drill around your rotor in a half circle get rid of grooves but, don't get too crazy and grind in one spot too long, looks really good also, IMHO.

I stuck my finger in mine and spun it. It didn't feel smooth. The movement was sort of chucky. Plus I have never changed it, so it is probably original.

As Ray said, the bearings should be available at almost every bearing supply store. 6304's are as common as dirt and widely used in lots of applications. They're about 6 bucks each in this part of the world, so I think the $10 US at Parts n More is a little expensive, and you should find them cheaper elsewhere. Correct, and certainly not arguing with you, but todays price here for Japanese NTN 6304 2RS bearings is $6.30NZD, which is slightly cheaper than the SKF equivalent at $6.90, and slightly dearer that the KOYO model at $5.95. At todays exchange rate of .73 US cents to the NZ dollar that makes the average price $4.38USD. So I still think Parts N More are creaming it a bit.

Anything sold specifically for motorcycle applications always seems to be overpriced. Thats just the way it is.

Common bearings like these are usually readily available locally. Check to see if you have a local supplier nearby. Not only do you get to see them first, you could keep a neighbor working.

There are two bearing suppliers in proximity to my home in Austin. Both are staffed by longtime bearings guys and they know what the good stuff is.

And they are usually pretty competitive in price with online stores, if you factor in shipping.

Absolutely, I couldnt agree more. I wont even use those self scan checkout things in the supermarket because everyone of those puts at least one, or two people out of work, and I wont use them out of principle. My wife thinks I'm mad and says it because I cant work them.

I use them, but only because both before and after the self checkouts, most places around me would only have at most 3 tills open with huge lineups. It isn't that they've let people go, it is that people don't want to work is the problem here.

Well, I needed some other from Mikes so I over payed even more and bought his for $12 along with the seal for that side.
