  • fairing mounting ? quick help

So I'm heading out for a camping trip tonight and I found a fairing I can buy on the way. PO said it came off a 79 xs1100s mine is 79 xs1100f.

As long as the PO has all the mounting hardware will I be able to throw it on fairly simple?

Is there a difference between the S and F as far as the fairing mounting?

    Thanks!

I'm pretty sure there's no difference on the fairing mounting, but there is some differences in the wiring harness IIRC. The other touring bits (bags, etc) are different....

I assume you mean it came off an SF. No such thing as an S.

The frames are the same between all the bikes, and it kinda depends on which fairing it is as to how easy it will be to install it. The Pacifico fairings have a 2-piece mounting bracket that requires you to remove the headlight ears (and that requires you to remove the forks). The Windjammer version has a 1-piece bracket that bolts to existing threaded holes in the frame down-tubes, and uses pipe clamps to clamp to the tubes as well. You can leave the headlight bucket installed, but you have to remove the headlight itself (not quite enough clearance).

You may want to get the mounting instructions from the link in my signature if it's the Pacifico, or the Windjammer one from Craig Vetter's site.

Eitehr way, be sure to post pictures of the process!

Vetter fairing and mount, no problem. Pacifico? I like the ride of my Pacifico more than I like my Vetter, but I'm glad I didn't try to install it by the side of the road on the way somewhere else. It's a bit more complicated. The wiring harness on the bike itself can cause issues if you leave the gauges attached to the stock wiring instead of running them through the fairing.

Do a Pacifico only if you have a place to lay over for the night when you run into a complication.

          It is Pacifico

Hmm, well this makes me think i may just have to strap her on the back for the ride to the camp site. There I will have my two brothers, one a hardley mechanic to assist.

Maybe I can mount it on my rack just right so it looks like I'm riding backwards down the highway.

You do not have to remove the forks, just the top plate of the tripple tree and they are a pita to install make sure you have a pigtail for the wiring and all the hardware

It would be easier to remove the forks than the top of the triple tree!

Once you pull off the headlight bucket and disconnect the wiring all you have to do is loosen the top three bolts and the stem bolt, pull up on the bars and take off the ears. If you do it this way you don't have to jack up the bike disconnect brake lines or speedo cable trust me I have mounted a pacifico before

a lot more work to drop the forks especially for someone camping

Garth's method is the way they tell you to do it in the pacifico instructions.
I did a Vetter one and took off the triple tree pulled the ears and bucket off as well.
Seems easier than taking off the forks.

Why did you do that? With the Vetter ones, the headlight bucket stays installed, and holds the wiring. A plastic cover (lots of them available on ebay)then replaces the headlight itself, and holds all the wiring in the bucket. I didn't have the cover, so I sewed up an old pair of dress pants and made a drawstring cover for it.

BTW I have the Vetter/Yamaha or vice versa.
No way the bucket is going to fit.
Ears probably but; I didn't want to chance them binding up hindering lock to lock movement of the handle bars.
The plastic box is something I didn't know about where can I get more info on that?

                              Seems like a good thing.

Right now I was able to keep things pretty neat but; I have to do something lighter and radio wires.
Not sure what I want to hook up. Thinking of a CB and an MP3 player.
