Can't you just loosen and turn the ears into the center as a temp solution?

I haven't had to do this on an XS, but have seen it done on other bikes.

The Pacifico is easier to install by yourself, as the 2 piece mount will hold the fairing while you bolt it on, whereas the Vetter you have to hold, with one hand, while you try and get the first bolt in with the other hand.

The wiring is pretty much the same for each fairing, each comes with a 9 pin pigtail and you just have to figure out which wire does what. All nine wires are not necessary. There should also be an adaptor for the headlight connector.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Hmmm... Well, the Windjammers are all pretty much the same, so maybe it's just the difference in dimensions between the round Special headlight and the rectangular Standard one. However, you can remove the bucket and leave the ears, folding them into the center. There is no "box", just a round cover that snaps to the front of the headlight bucket for Specials. I've never seen one for a Standard though.

The cyclesounds radio enclosure that mounts to the Fairing just wires through the 9-pin connector. I have not seen a CB/MP3 combo though (I've been looking for something similar). I think I'll keep the tape player/radio, and add a handlebar-mounted J&M CB radio when I can scrape the pennies together. I use my phone as an MP3 player, so I'm going with the bluetooth J&M headset so I can use my phone and then get the Bluetooth dongle for the CB radio.

I'm not so sure that the Yamaha fairings were made by Vetter. I don't recall seeing anywhere on his site anything about making any for Yamaha, but he did make them for Kawasaki. I also find that putting the Vetter on and off by myself is really pretty easy if you do it right. I just put all 4 bolts into the fairing, and the set it on the mount, then I only need to hold onto the top till I get a hand on the one of the back bolts, at which point it's pretty easy to hold the back down while I put the nut on. As soon as one is done, the rest area breeze.

I helped GarthXs put a Pacifico fairing on his '78E and we tried to leave the headlight ears on the forks but it didn't work, they interfered with the mount bracket.

I took the Yamaha/Vetter fairing off my 80G and ran it stock for a while, then tried folding in the headlight ears when I put the fairing back on so I wouldn't have to remove the handlebar mount again.

It worked but the inside edges of the ears rubbed on the wires a little more than I liked and the ears had a tendency to turn back out while riding and rub against the fairing. I thought about tying them in place along with the wires but I wound up removing them.

            On the fairing pictured here

            http://s910.photobucket.com/albums/a...g%26newest%3D1

The windshield says Vetter fairing Co.
The inside pockets and locking box is very simular if not identical to a Windjammer. Cigarette lighter knock out is the same.
I bought a pair of vetter lowers and, they are a perfect fit.
It came with a Vetter bracket that said Honda it fit the fairing but not the bike.
As I understand the Vetter fairings were designed to fit all bikes you just needed the bracket for your particular bike.

I emailed Vetter 3x to ask and never got a reply.

I believe this fairing was offered by Yamaha around 80 or 81 this was the time I understand Vetter was being sold to (Pacifico I think) or going through some changes.
They also had a fire lost records.

The fairing came with a Yamaha badge on it, used the stock standard directional lenses and head light.

Thats why I call it a Yamaha/Vetter for lack of a better designation.
It's just based on information I discovered in the process of buying and installing the fairing.

I saw some radios that fit in the cycle sound housing equipted with a usb terminal and an Ipod dock. As I recall around $60.00 on ebay.
              I thought that was cool.

Are the CB's expensive can they be bought second hand?

Yeah, the CB's are really expensive. To get the whole wired set (headset, mounting bracket and CB unit) it's right around $600 or so. J&M stuff ain't cheap. I've never seen them used, but you might get lucky on ebay.

I don't know about a CB/MP3 combo, but you can probably find a CB radio that also plays eight tracks... later models might play cassette tapes.

Just a little anachronistic, isn't it?

I put a marine stereo in mine with just a memory stick and USB plugs, no CD at all.

It did have AM/FM/Weather, but it couldn't take the bumps.

Vetter was sold to Craig's banker in 1978, so his site has little to no info after that.

It was sold to Bell helmets when the banker went bankrupt. (~80-81)
