  • Choke idle speed?

Is it normal for the idle speed, at cold start with choke, to jump to around 4500 rpm? Seems kind of high to me. Idle speed is normal after warm up.

    too high?

    Hi,

In this kind of weather, 80F, if fully choked mine will shoot up, not quite that high, but much higher than say when the temp is 50F. Just back off the choke till it goes to a normal speed.

Yep. Perfectly normal. Pull the choke, and it should start, then gradually climb to the point that you think it's going to explode. Then, you bump the choke in one notch, and it should drop the RPMs again, and gradually climb again. Bump the choke in all the way, and it should drop to normal (1100) rpm.

one night i pulled the choke fully out, started her up, ran back into the house and i thought i was gonna blow all the rods and pistons out of the motor

it scared the heck out of me

now, i start her full choke, wait just a few seconds, then let her warm up the rest of the way one notch out

once im ready to pull out, i click the choke all the way in and shes good to go from there
