        ceramic

        Hi,
I called a local guy, and was told that it could either be done in powder coat or in ceramic. Ive seen a set of pipes locally that were done in powdercoat, and they were flat black, not real appealing to me, but perhaps they can do that in a gloss too. This same guy can do them in ceramic, which he says is better, they are coated in ceramic both inside and out. He also said, that he sandblasts them on the inside and out for the ceramic, when quizzed on sandlasting the inside of a pipe, he stated that what he could do was ,,,,,good enough,,,, sandblasting on the inside for the ceramic to work, ,,,,,,,,,,,,huh????
He quoted a price of 250 dollars for the entire work of doing the header pipes in ceramic since my mufflers still look nice n chrome. I thought the price was reasonable, but that properly sandblasting the inside of the pipes, just doesnt sound possible to me. I conjectured that the outside was fine sandblasted but perhaps the inside would need some kind of chemical treatment instead of sandblasting, but who really knows??

I'm guessing the "inside" sandblasting is more for getting out as much soot and oil, etc as possible before the headers are dunked in some sort of cleaning solution and maybe even the ceramic product. IIRC, I think even regular chrome plating shops are a bit nervous about contaminating their various cleaning baths when working on old stuff. It's not like you'll ever see way up inside to worry about how it looks. He may do a bit finer work at the ends of the pipes where you can see. Maybe that's what "good enough" entails.

              Ceramic

The coating I used from Eastwood is ceramic base if I understand corretly, The VHT was ceramic also but didnt like the results/looks. I was not worried about carbon inside the pipes as it just adds to the heat shield effect and will come back after you use the bike a while.

              Spray Coating $15.00

Time to do it yourself 2 hours.

              Money saved $200.00+ Priceless!

                Black exaust coating

There are several black high temp coatings out there, both flat and gloss. The OEM Yamaha black chrome was a costly coating that Yamaha invented and you cant do it at home, or at your local plaiting shop for that matter. any repo. will look good when new, but it will prob. not last like OEM.
