I have a brass float I can send you. I just upgraded all mine to the plastic floats from mikesxs. PM me your address and I will get it on the way.

#4 is cutting out on me????

So I spent yesterday trying to get my floats at least close to the same setting by doing the clear tube and liquid method. Rode it for about 30 minutes last night and it still has the bogging between 1500 and 3500 and by the end of the ride my #4 plug is still all fouled. Just for fun today I pretty much closed off the idle jet screw and took it for another 30 min ride. Same thing except somehow the #4 plug was actually worse? Hopefully I can get a float from Coltrain and maybe that will solve all of my woes!Nathan

Part 2
I figured I would keep this all in the same thread.
So I got a different float today and put it in and I have all the floats (measuring each float on both sides) set to between 25.53 mm and 25.59 mm. So hopefully now with the correct float the fouling of the #4 with be done.
After that I pulled the needles out of the diaphragm assembly to see where the needles were set. They were all set to the lowest (richest) notch and then they had 1 washer under the circlip. Now my plugs have been kind of grayish white, even the electrode and grounding strap are that color on some. So where do I go from here now...
Also is there usually a plastic washer/bushing on top of the needle?
Thanks in advanceNathan

Go with either middle groove or 4th richest groove. I just acquired my xs and they are set at 4th groove. I have done alot of research.. I read that folks like em at the middle notch no matter what mods. I am not sold on that. yet! I am gonna set them to the middle and try it next time I have my carbs off. You can see most of my settings in my sig.. we are close... My bike pulls really nice and hard. Under 3 grand is what I am trying to improve. It seems I may be a tad rich.. not sure. I do know those green coils are beasts. NICE SPARK! Low end is much nicer after those.
Have you syncd lately? Lot of times that will clean up some low end.. Hope you receive my floats at least by tomorrow!1978 Macho Maroon XS1100 Mikesxs green coils, ZRX Carbs, spaghetti jardine 4 into 2

But the thing is, if I am already running lean and the needle is already set as rich as it can be set (other than taking out the little washers) where do I go at this point.
If I move the clip to the middle notch then I am going to lean it out even more than it already is.Nathan

The needle height is for the RPM midrange, the transition between the pilot and main jets. If your float heights and jetting is correct, it should be the least prone to "stumble" in the center clip position, YMMV2H7 (79) owned since '89

Ok so here is what is going on currently. All carbs are set to the same setting on everything. I moved the clip up on the needles to the center notch and removed the washer. As I said before the floats are all set to between 25.53 and 25.59. Compression is #1 150 #2 150 #3 140 #4 140. I put the carbs back on yesterday and now the bike runs worse than before. Its not fouling out the #4 plug anymore though. before it would foul out the plug by the time I was done syncing the carbs and now it does not do that (yet). Now the bike almost dies when I give it throttle. It will idle nice, I can get it to sync but when I give it throttle it will start to rev and then just drop like a rock, let off the throttle and it will go back to an idle.
I am getting to the end of my rope here with this bike. I need it cause its all I have to drive right now and its a little hard to get a job when I cant drive anywhere.
Thanks
Edit: also I taped over the holes drilled in the airbox.Last edited by natemoen; 07-10-2010, 01:51 PM.Nathan

What your describing to me, sounds like a lean condition. How does it run with the choke/enricher pulled out one notch? If I lean out by putting the leve rin a notch to soon in the warmup, the bike does just that. It will idel fine, and when I give it gas, it stumbles as it tries to rev, then won't gain rpms just stumble. Let off the throttle and it idles just fine. Pull the lever back out a notch and it idles up give it throttle and it responds just fine.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Ok so I tried spraying some starting fluid in the snorkel and it actually would kill the bike (never seen that happen before like that) but when I would restart the bike I would be able to give the bike throttle normally and it would rev up perfectly without any stumbling or anything. So I quick put the bike back together and figured I would take it out for a quick test ride before the rain starts. Right when I put it in gear it started to do the same thing again would start stumbling between about 1500 and 4000. As long as I kept the RPMs above that I was ok and when it got down low it would start to stumble, as long as I kept the throttle open or pumped it I could keep it going. So I rode it hard and fast for about 10 miles. Got back and checked the pipes to see if they were all hot and #4 was hot but significantly cooler than the rest. Pulled the plugs and here is what they looked like. And #4 smelled like gas and not oil.
Here is the link to it as well http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...n/DSCN3020.jpg

Well, it seems your running very rich and not lean by the plugs. No 1 looks pretty nice though. Have you tuned the mixtures? Tried a colortune plug in them yet? Forgive me for not looking back through this thread, but have you looked for broken off mix screw tips? It definitely seems to be carb related.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
