  • Wide open question........

Just got the 81 xs h started for the first time, ran for about 3 min. and died. I just filled the carbs up to see if it would start. Filled carbs back up and now it will turn over well but no go. It has spark and wet plugs. Any suggestions? 81 carbs, stock everything as far as I can tell.

Clean and dry your plugs off, they won't fire if they're wet. You might have some carb issues still, maybe a sticking float. When you fill them this time, tap the carb bowls with a screwdriver handle in case the floats are sticking.

If you haven't checked out the carbs yet, you may have the same issue I did. I rebuilt mine and set the floats per specs on the height, but it was still really screwed up (read high level on 2 of them- bad) until I took them off and put the tubes on from the bottom of the bowls to verify fuel level. You can check the outside carbs while on the bike to get an idea, w/out going through the hassle of taking them off. The bottom of the bowl on mine (80sg) took a 8.0x 1.0 mm thread in the hole for the plug. I used grease zerks that I drilled out, with 1/4'' clear tubing. That and my coils were marginal. Maybe check them out too- it's a quick check with a MM.

I don't know if its recommended but how about starting fluid?Maybe a quick shot in the air filter.Did this on a neighbors dirt bike this weekend and it worked.

As weird as it sounds I tried starting fluid once and it did not do a thing for me. for some reason my bike only likes gas I even tried spraying it in when it was running, idle didnt change at all...
