Mine has play on the pivot and can be wiggled by hand but has worked well for years regardless . YMMV ...

Usually they can be disassembled and cleaned even without a new seal and work well

I guess thanks to the linked brake system - that right caliper gets a lot of use/wear

Hi Brian,
a caliper off an ordinary Special should fit right on.
The calipers on XS750 & XS850 Specials look the same but I dunno if they are identical.

Front calipers that fit !

My forks measure 43mm or 1 5/8" between the mounting holes. I think that is the crucial point. Anyone got one that measures 43mm ? Thanks to all who have responded ! Brian

I think regular Special calipers are different . The 81 LH had the same brake system as my XJ1100. Linked front left caliper with rear caliper with proportioning valve . Front right caliper on its own . Mounting holes are different IIRC .

Hi Brian,
seems I know less than I thought about the '81 Midnight.
The E-bay offering looks to be the caliper for a Standard.
If it is indeed the right one for an '81 Midnight and you are OK with the price, you'd be amazed how well a thorough cleaning, a rebuild kit and a lick of paint can fix it up like new.

Those calipers are very hard to find. The 81 LH and the 82 XJ will interchange. It's possible that the 82 XV920 will also work, looks the same, but not 100% sure.

Yeah as those are very limited production pieces, finding one for sale in the condition your looking for is probably just a shade harder than finding a new never used 1963 split window coupe Corvette!
