Prep work for removing tank rust?

I'm going to try to remove the rust from my tank. What is the best way to plug the petcock holes during the acid rinses?
Should I also remove the gas cap-before I start the rust removal process? Thanks Jason

Jason, I cut some plates from some 1/8" flat stock I had here, and then drilled holes for the mounting screws. I also cut a gasket from an old inner tube I had and put it together with some rtv sealant. I have heard of one person using the actual petcock to block off the hole. He removed the filter tower and then fabricated a gasket and put it back together. As for the gas cap, it was suggested (think it was Sid Hansen) to use an expanding rubber plug, such as is used in automotive engines to replace frost plugs.
