Re: Float setting. I am now wondering the float height for my carbs- I wanted to verify the measurement... I saw it somewhere, now can't locate it. (1980 sg). I set them at 23mm as I remember (w/o the gasket- off the base), but want to check them with the tubes that are hooked into the bowl drain plugs, as in the maint section on carbs...(had some fuel go into the airbox today after it was shut down- mainly due to me- I left the petcock on prime by mistake, but it still should have shut off at the float, and it's running too fat).
What thread size is the plug? My book is not accessible at the moment. I think I'm still fat...(yeh, the carbs are too )
The setting for the height with the tubes shows the level at the base of the screw that hold the bowl on- correct? Thx

It is 23mm +/- 0.5mm on the 80 G, SG & LG. Assuming you have the original carbs on it. You could reset them to 23.5 and see it that works.

Make sure the float valves are seating properly. I usually polish the float valve seats with a Q-tip and some metal polish.

      plug thread size

      Hi,

I have a late model carb set, and the threads for the bowl plug are eight by 1.25. If you want to make the tool, they can be made from grease zerks as below, but I just saw that Z1 enterprises sells the actual tool for under ten bux recently.

I found grease zerks with that thread available at napa, special order a little over a buck each. I asked, those are supposedley officially only available a hundred at a time, but there was some napa dealer somewhere, Wisconsin methinks, that had a partial box so they sold me five. I have five total here, you can make the tool with one of them by drilling out the zerk, and putting a tube on it. Getting the tube to stay on is tricky, maybe best to silver braze an extension onto the drilled out zerk before putting the tube on to make the tool.

I had very good luck with my floats by just taking the time to be sure on the setting as you specified from the book. Didnt actually need the tool, so didnt complete it, if you want to make it, check with napa first, if they cant find you some metric zerks, pm me, and I will share what I have for shipping them. This info was originally posted in about april ten, if you want to look it up.
