Anyone want a nice XS825?

    Ok. tried swapping the spark plug wires. #1 would then pop out the exhaust every few seconds. Whenever it did a couple of pops, blue smoke would come with it.

    #4 warmed up but not as fast as 2 or 3.

    I took the coils off and tested them. 2-3 coil tested 1.5 primary, nothing secondary. (this is the one that works)

    1-4 tested 1.5 primary 1500 secondary. (this is the one not working)

    I went and took the TEC coils off of the 79 parts bike, and put them on, but, so far, no spark at all. They are 2.4ohms primary, so I bypassed the ballast resistor.

    Then it started pouring rain, again.

      Craz - did you mean 15,000 secondary? That would be right in spec. If it was 1500, you might try grafting some new wires into the old coils - it's pretty easy and it works. The 78-80 coils are a little easier to do, than the later model coils, so that's good. Sounds like you might be on to something.
      I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

        I'm not a guru or even mechanichly inclined........but i had my number one popping... Occasionaly....and it went away when i adjusted the air/fuel mixture screw out five turns....the engine started reving up at 4 1/2 turns and the popping went away.....

          a valve that is too tight or slightly burnt will hold enough compression to idle well enough but once up to temperature or under a load does not and can give all the signs you are seeing. leak down test would be best. but lacking the equipment to do that. checking valve clearance and compression is the best course.

            Put the high perf coils off JD on tonight and now it runs on all 4.

            Much better with full power. I will change the carbs next, because #4 needle is broken off and I couldn't get the tip out. 2 and 3 were broken too, but I got those out.

            I will go with the 80-81 type carbs, much less to go wrong.

              So does that mean it's not an 825 anymore ? Glad you're making headway.

                Yeah, it's an 11 again. Now to start putting all the upgrades from the other on to it.

                Will take a while. First thing carbs.

                Then my new rear tire is in, will put it on the tubeless rim, which also has new bearings and seals.

                I have LOTS of things to transfer over.
