    Carb Removal

That fun project seems to be a ongoing part of XS ownership. I cut the top bracket off flush with the airbox to make it easier, relatively speaking. I have toyed with the idea of going to pods just to make carb removal easier.

That's why I did it, and I never looked back. I did have to bump the mains one notch, as you've already pointed out. I also fabricate a little metal strap that runs from in-between #2 and #3, to the underside of where the air box strap used to go (hope that makes sense). When you get rid of the airbox, it's a good idea to add some support back there so your carb boots don't take a beating from them bouncing around.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

        I saw it.....

but didn't make the connection between the xs pods and the next higher jet size. DUH! I'm starting to get my head wrapped around what is going on inside this bike again. When I parked the bike last fall I was fairly disquisted with it and let it set all winter. Of course not having any heat in the mancave helped. This winter was sort of cold. Must be the global warming!

I actually understood what you were trying to say about the carb brace. Something I was pondering myself. I think it might be bad to suddenly have your carbs pop out of their holders while rolling down the road!

Tim, an easy mod for making the carbs easy to remove is....

            1. Lose the top bracket for the air box altogether.
            2. Cut the snorkel tube off 1" from it's base.
            3. Now after removing the lower piece of the air box and the filter, the top piece of the box can be easily removed prior to removing the carbs.

I've done this to both my bikes, and there have been no problems, and it also breathes better in conjunction with drilling out the bottom piece in the center filter area.

              Short Snorkel

Yeah Phil, I cut that down also. Read it about doing it in a thread last year. It took me awhile to screw up my nerve to chop off a piece of my airbox, but in hindsight the engineers should have done it right at the start. I think I'll not be drilling holes in the airbox until I get the carbs right.

With the holes drilled in the bottom, anything dropped thru the new snorkel opening (ex: a bolt) will fall right out the bottom usually. Good luck with your carbs, once they're dialed in, won't have to fool with them much any more.

this link used to have photos ...

but it may help you with the master. Trick is rolling the seal inside out and then back to the correct position as it is pried up over the stopper on the piston.
