  • Swing arm hook thingy

Would any of you happen to know what the hook thingy on the end of the swing arm on the right side end is for?

It's for the shock tool that came in the stock tool kit. A piece of wire that hooks there, then under the fender, and around to the other side. It makes it so you can keep the swingarm up hight enough to remove the rear axel without removing the exhaust.
    1980 XS850SG - Sold
    1981 XS1100LH Midnight Special (Sold) - purchased 9/29/08
Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

There's two (or at least on my bike). The little tab welded near the pinch bolt has no use I can see, but the other one is for the 'tire change cable' required on the 'standards' (specials too?) to hold the swingarm up when removing the rear axle. This cable has a 'sling' that goes on the drive-side shock, two hooks that connect to the frame just below the seat, and the other end hooks to the hook. Install it when the bike is sitting with weight on the suspension, and when you pull it up onto the center stand, the cable keeps the swingarm high enough that you don't have to pull the mufflers to get the axle out.

          hook thingy

This was an afterthought. They should have made the design so the axle could be removed without all the hoopla. They did on the Special, which was introduced in the second year of production. Oh well, hindsight is ALWAYS 20-20

It's there to hook the brake torque arm on. That will hold the brake caliper assembly suspended while you remove the wheel.

I like the design. If they didn't raise up the pipes on the standard, you wouldn't be able to take any fast corners without grinding your exhaust. The XS1100 is after all, a beautiful road racing machine.
