How much oil/ATF in my xs1100 sg?

All I can find is an owners manual for the SH model. I need to know exactly how much oil/ATF to add in my forks on a 1980 xs1100 SG?

If adding ATF, does it matter what brand? type F, or something else? Does ATF have different weights.

Special uses 7.61oz/225cc

Use the synthetic if your going to use ATF. It will hold up much better.

Brands will be limited with synthetic, use a quality brand name. The stuff I used is made by a Canadian co. called PetroCanada. Good quality product if you can find it.

Im a little confused by this, Is the SG a special? Because I thought all models of the xs1100 were "specials"

In this manual I read said the "XS special" can hold 207cc-240cc?

Thats why I ask if the SG has an exact amount of oil?

From 78-81 the XS came in two models, the Standard and the Special. Ok in 78 it was only availabel as a Standard. As to forks, the Standard forks have the front wheel mounted directly on the bottom of the forks. The Special models have them mounted on the front of the forks.

By definition, the SF, SG, and the SH are Special models. The LG and LH are a flashy version called the "Midnight Special". With the excpetion of some gold chrome plated trim and the LG, and the LH are 99% identical to the other Special models. The Standard models are labled E,F,G, and H.

Yes the SG IS a a Special, that is what I have also.

I don't know what manual you are using but what I posted came directly from the Clymer manual and that is what I put in MY forks.

Air adjustable forks, which is what the SG has stock, take the amount I posted, regular forks take 7.12oz/212cc.

I never priced it but, I was told ATF is the way to go for cost and it is a super detergent that keeps parts well lubed and clean.

Id like others input?

Maybe I need the difference explained to me so I can understand, other than the additives that make ATF a superior lubricant and hydraulic oil compared to the OLD fork oil.

Try running fork oil in a transmission and see what happens.

All I can find is an owners manual for the SH model.

If you don't have one yet, you can download a copy of the service manual (2 different versions) from the link in my signature. Be sure you have at least one of them if you are trying to do ANY regular maintenance. That includes changing the fork oil.
