  • Evapo rust update

I have a bit of an update on the evapo rust stuff I was using. The tanks turned out real nice. I sloshed the stuff around and left it in the tanks for a few days. Rinsed them out well and everything stayed rust free while i was prepping for paint etc. None of the items I tried it on (in my other post about evapo rust) have changed at all from the final results. They are all still shiny and rust free.
I left the gas cap from my 81LH in the solution and unfortunetly forgot about it until yesterday. The gold color is gone as is the chrome and some of the rest of it. It does not pay to leave parts in it for about 5 months at a time. Here are a couple of pics of the results of a long term soak. Not Recommended!

It looks like the only thing holding the chrome on that cap was the rust! Did the solution do that pitting or was the cap really that rusty when you dropped it in the solution?

Actually there was only very minor pitting on the cap from beforethe long soak. I just tossed it in the mostly used up solution, thinking a day or two soak would do it. Then Mr Stupid left it in there, completely forgetting about it. The evapo rust did the rest. I have no pics of the cap before...sorry.

        Yeah

But what's left of it is sure clean! I did the same thing with what was supposed to be stainless acorn nuts. I left them in a weak solution of simple green for several weeks. It ate them up like that but not so pretty and clean!

Gotta love that shiny, "orange-peel" finish! Does the lock still work after all that?

And does it work better than Coke and fine steel wool?

I've got a lot of rust to get worked off.

Buy a few boxes of upland game loads for your shotgun (#7 shot low base shells would be perfect), find a large open area and slowly walk around the bike while shooting at it from about 40 paces. Try to achieve even coverage. By the time you run out of shells you should have a nice post-apocalyptic patina over the entire bike to match your gas cap!

I actually just primed that cap and sent it off to the painters to be painted with the other items I have there. I think it will look kinda slick with that rough finish but painted. Besides I need something until I can find another cap. Preferably a gold MNS one. Anyone have a spare around? You know tank hooped beyond fixing but cap still good mode
