  • valve cover question

On my XJ I can not get the valve cover off and it seems that I must "move" the motor in some manner. Any suggestions? There is a frame brace in the way. Do I need to remove the engine mounts and rock it forward or back? I would like to cut the brace off as I see no need for it except to hold the brake line splitter. The manual says it should just come off, yea right.

It should come out without having to move the motor. #1 is make sure all the bolts are out (I know, sounds dumb, but I've done it before ). I usually get mine out from the left side, but you have to get it up high enough to clear the cam sprockets. Usually takes a little wiggling around, and you want to make sure it isn't catching on the clutch cable. Usually have to wiggle it back and forth a little too. You just have to be meaner than the valve cover .

If you're still stuck, you might try a PM to TRBig - he's got an XJ, and he'll know definitively how to get it off on an XJ.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

It seems to be catching on the front (exhaust) chain sprocket (?) and I had to cut the bolt to even get it loose. I am working on a 82 XJ

I know on the XS it is a very tight fit to get the cover over the cam and sprockets. I assume it is very tight on the XJ, but have never owned or worked on one.
