Will the starter not turn with the button or will the bike not run but the starter turns the engine over.

      Wiring diagram.

Do you have a Wiring Diagram?
If not Here is a link for a wiring diagram.

When you push the starter button:

Does your bike turn over but not run?
Or does it not turn over?

If the starter turns with the relay jumped, but not via the starter button, the KILL switch is in wrong or bad. Did you replace the COMPLETE switch assembly, or just part of it? If you replaced the complete switch, what bike was the new one designed for? Not all the bikes used the same color codes for the wires, so you will need to know this. Also check as make sure you didn't pinch or break a wire putting the switch back together. It can make for a "FUN" time trying to get the bike running, I KNOW...

Then you need to ohm out the wires on what you put in. If it's off a 650, it MAY have some of the wires connected in a different way than the stock XS11. My guess is that is your problem. Good luck, and let us know!

Did you change the handlebars? The switch housing needs to be grounded to the handlebars to start the bike. If the bars are painted, that can prevent the switch from grounding. You cannot start the bike with the switch unless the housing is grounded to the handlebars (or somewhere else on the bike).

If it were me, I'd start by tracing where the power is going or not. Turn the key on and the stop switch and see if you have 12 V at the red wire going to the solenoid (smaller wire) by taking a DVM and grounding to the battery and putting positive to that wire end. If its there, then the issue is in the start button since it completes the ground. If not then take that stop switch open and check each side of it for 12V. Basically, look at the wiring diagram and follow the path of the electricity from the battery out and see where it stops. Thats where the smoke is getting out.

                        Fuse block

Loose fuses in the fuse block were the cause.
