  • Horn draw & wiring diagram

    Hey, Folks.

On my '80SG, there are two horns. One works, but it's only a pittiful little "meep". I'm looking at replacing the two with something much more... abrasive. When a cager doesn't see me and tries to swerve into my lane, I like the horn to be a real slap in the face that comes right before the exhaust blast that I try to blow out his windows with as I get the heck outta there. I think it's important for cagers to learn that they could have killed someone because they neither checked their mirror, blind spot, nor signalled.

Here's my question: does anyone have a colour wiring diagram? I've been going blind trying to decipher the black and white one that I've got. I'm trying to see what else is on the horn circuit before I go and add 10 amps of horn. I expect 10 amps is too much, but I found a couple nice big out of tune horns that are tempting my to try them out.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Sorry for the double post, but I've been thinking again....

On the same note... I've got some grip heaters (3 amps iirc) that I'd like to install. I was planning to run wires from the accessory terminals, but thought I should check if anyone's got a suggestion for an existing circuit that would have room for them and a place to tie into.

Here's a link to aTC's post with all the wiring diagrams in color.

Have you swapped out your fuse block? If so, there is an extra space in there that would be perfect to add an accessory (like heated grips). Just be aware that the charging system on these bikes is not very strong, so unless you've swapped out all your lights for LEDs, you may drain your battery if you use heated stuff for more than a few minutes at a time.

Yes, I have changed out my fuse block, and you're right... there is a spare spot for accessories! Thanks for the tip.

The engine on this one is actually from an XJ, so I think it puts out more electrical power. I'll be sure to check my charging voltage with everything running though. I was thinking I may install a combination clock/compass/thermometer/voltmeter if I can find one I like. I've got a tiny faring/windshield that looks like it'll be good for mounting stuff like that.

If you find one of those devices that you like, let me know, because I would love to have one myself. I have a little LCD clock velcro'd to my fairing, but I can't see it at night, and it's not waterproof.

I put a Stebel Nautilus air horn on mine and used the aux fuse whatever it is beside the fuse block. I ran 14 ga wire to it and it blasts...

Careful with the grip heaters. I fried my stator with mine. They have two settings, high and low. Used them on high on a cold 200k ride one night with light on full beam all the way. About 20k's from home the alternator cooked and battery drained. I pushed the last 5k's.

Moral is follow the instructions. Use high for warm up only for no more than 5 minutes, preferably before turning lights on and then switch to low.

                Hi Big Red,
I would recommend using a RELAY for the horns.

                  Hi BWalker5...

Do you have an XS or an XJ? Didn't see it listed on your post, and couldn't remember what you ride...

If he's got the XJ motor, he gains a brush type setup and 6 more amps of power...

I recently added 2-50 watt halogen driving lights to mine and a Voltmeter. I've only noticed the voltage itself dropping at idle... on the road, full 14 volts, and I have ridden several times now for 40 mile trips w/ them on... no ill effects yet. I hope I don't fry my stator on my XJ w/ them since I've added an 8 amp load... knock on wood... so far so good! They sure make a HUGE difference!

Since he's got an XJ motor, I'd think he'd be fine with the added load.

Mines an XS, which is about maxed out with standard equipment, let alone any extra's. With the XJ he'll be fine.
