my 1100 wont start either by the kick start or starter button, but will start when I cross the terminals on the starter relay but will stop running as soon as I remove the screw driver any ideas ? I have tried a different starter relay.

Never owned one with a ballast resistor, but this sounds alot like a bad one.

Your main fuse might be blown or just not all the way in . It's next to the battery behind the left side cover. Make sure you use the key to take the cover off pulling on it will break it, just in case you didn't know that. What year and model do you have ?

I had the same trouble. I would need to jump from a hot wire to the red/white soldered wire on the solenoid to start my '78. If I took the wire off, the engine quit. As long as the wire was on, I could turn the key off and the engine kept running. I just discovered the kill switch on the right handlebar wasn't working right, the two red/white wires weren't connected by the switch. I removed them and wired them together and everything works fine.
BTW, I have 2 ballast resistors, they both read '0', but the bike still runs. ???
