  • Three Blackened Carbs

So, after I replaced the oil seals on the crankshaft, I replaced the alternator and the timing cover. (can you replace the timing cover incorrectly) I tried to start the bike but it only sputtered and acted like it wanted to turn over. I cleaned the spark plugs and then I noticed that the carbs seemed to jump when the engine popped, so I decided to pull the carbs. The brass valves on carbs 1,2 & 4 were blackened, but number three was clean and shiny.

    Any thoughts?

Possible that you put the reluctor back in with it out 180 deg?

Is that possible? I think it only went in one way? The slots seemed to be slightly offset? I will check.

      Thanks.

Any thoughts about why the third carb would not be black, or why the other three would be black?

The governor assy. can fit only one way into the crankshaft, but if the snap ring was removed, the assy. can be seperated and put back together 180 off. Easy check is put #1 cyl. at TDC, and the reluctor should be pointing to the top P/U coil. HTH

I think I figured it out last night. I removed the Timing cover, and pulled the unit. In the image, the red (Spark advance?) may not have been set on the blue posts. It was a bit of work to set them on (Not hard, just requiring ones' attention) I don't remember focusing on it when I replaced the unit after I installed the seals.

Now I jsut need to reinstall the carbs and see if that did it.

            Thanks Phil.
