  • stock air box vs pods?

hi, before i start adj my carbs, i have to figure out what to do for a filter. the bike came with nothing, and 110 main, 42.5 pilot jets across the board. should i buy a stock airbox, and leave the stock jetting, or buy the pods and rejet? the bike is an 80 midnight special. i'm not too concerned about performance, i just want a nice simple, reliable setup. also, what yr of airbox will fit?

Well a stock air box and a new K&N filter will cost you just as much as a set of pod filters from mikesXS . So as far as performance improvements you will receive about the same not very much. The benefits of pod filters is easy access to your carbs making changes more pleasant.

          Hi cheezy,
the stock airbox works fine provided that all the rubber bits are nice and flexible and you never need to work on the carbs.
As the rubber bits on a used airbox will most likely be hard and nasty and you will have to work on your carbs, fitting pods such as Mikes or UNIpods that do not restrict the small holes on the carbs' intake periphery, will allow carb access in 5 easy minutes rather than a half-hour of skinned knuckles and cussin' plus the bike will run nice.
If you had a good stock airbox on the bike you might decide to keep it but starting with nothing, pods is the way to go.

Well I have a dyno jet kit in my carbs but on slowmo\'s bike he had 115 jets and his plug colour is perfect so there was no need to rejet his carbs. I cleaned and adjusted his carbs and he is now enjoying 30 km more per fill up. His mileage when his fuel light came on went from 150 km to over 180 km he still has a grin on his face.

Sorry about that it\'s www.mikesxs.net if you are in the USA or xs650direct.com if you are in Canada. They sell parts for xs650\'s but there are lots of parts that can be used on xs1100\'s also.

also should mention that if you see something on mikesxs that you want or thing will work, DO NOT e-mail or call them to ask about it. Their policy is that they only sell parts for 650's, even if they will work on our 1100's. Best bet is to check here to see if the parts will interchange.

This is almost like asking what oil/tires is the best. Me, been running a stock airbox with a Uni filter for years and have been content. Pods sound good and do make it easier to get to and from your carbs, but if you do em right, that fix is few and far between. With you having a MNS , I would prefer the stock set up. And.........whole bunch of people have grief with pods when they get caught in the rain or try to ride back from the car wash. I put pods on a 1100 Spectre I had and quickly went back to the stock setup after trying to ride thru a few frog floaters. Let the games begin!!!!
