'79 xs1100sf shaft drive play/slap normal???

  • '79 xs1100sf shaft drive play/slap normal???

    throttle on /off /on low speed there is slap in drive train,,
    is this a normal characteristic or do i have a problem,
    it feels excessive,,(my old cx500 honda shaft drive does
    not have this slap!)
    any help to offer?

    Yep,

    Sounds like you may have a u-joint problem. There is also the chance of a rear drive issue. I'll leave you with other members who have worked on these areas. Have you put it on the center stand to determine where the slap is at?

      If you're used to bikes with not much slop, this ain't one of them. Check things out though, u-joint, mid drive, final drive, driveshaft axle splines. Good luck!

          i've got the same bike....

          it does have some slop when you chop the throttle.

          if your worried and thinking it's to much then tear it down for inspection and
          greasing. all else fails you have done some needed maintenence on the bike.

          or you may find a bad U-joint, either way you have helped your bike out.

          i have torn mine down and i didn't find anything that was worn.

          2012 FJR1300 Gen 2. Heli bar risers, R-gaza crash bars, mccruise cruise control.

          (2)2008 WR250R. Because kids outgrew others.

          2007 Suzuki V-Strom 1000. (Just added 2024) pre-crashed.

          1975 Kawasaki S1 250. My first bike. Still have it. NO I'm not selling it!!

          Most bike problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!!
