  • high idle/HAZZAA!!

well iv been sufferig from a high idle problem for a while now starts and runds at 2-3000 rpm pulling the carbs adjusting putting them back on only to find out...damn the stupid throttle cable is caught up and causing my probles. re adjusted the carbs slapped them on and bam lowest idle iv ever had 800-1000 rpm....

so heres where the questions come in to play. what is the average idle for these bikes? i think 900 is a little high it stutters and dies when i try to do 700 rpm idle im testing with NO air filters by the way (dont worry! clean shop air!) but i do plan on running mikes xs pods or the cheaper ebay ones because im on a tight budget so is it now an air to fuel mixture issue i need to address or is it still a dirty carb/fuel starved/ stuck float w/e

another tid bit. the right spark plug looked a little black the right looked tanned does the soot indicate rich mixture or is it oil? wont oil be shiney not just sooty?

thanks for any input fellow xs'rs i will soon be hitting the streets! as the ginger kids on south park said- HAZZAA!!

Shop manual recommends 1100 RPM idle. Sooty indicates rich condition or weak spark. If it was oil, you would see oil. You could try turning the idle mixture screw in 1/4 turn or so, that might help.

Sync the carbs before you set the idle mixture.Beg,barrow or steal some vacuum gauges. This might help.www.factorypro.com Terry

the carbs seem to be perfectly syched as far as i can tell. i did the bread tie trick and didnt have to adjust a thing really. iv only messed with the idle positions and then put it back on the bike untill i figured out the linkage was geting hung up..sigh...all that work for nothing. btw what are thoes stack things?? i said i was putting on pods. i dont think it would be wise to run without filters and go straight stacks...but it would look cool =)
so..off igoto learn how to adjust the a/f mixture

              im with 81xs

on that topic, but you can make your own sync tool with some 1/8 inch id clear tubing 2 yard sticks and some zip ties , do a google search for diy manometer, I suggest the ones with tubes rather than the one with a single vac guage , way more accurate

even being slightly out of sync can cause problems , the bread tie sync gets you close , but one carb could still be pulling harder than the rest , a proper sync tool will show you if one is off even a tiny bit . As far as tuning there is no point in tuning anything at this point if you don't have air filters on it , as soon as you add them your tuning will change and you'll be right back where you are now . Get some air filters , sync , then set your idle mixture , then sync again , then figure out if you need to change anything jetting wise by riding it and reading the plugs .
