Personally, I wouldn't be interested in buying new parts that I have to cut or drill. That being said, I would be interested in reproduction sidecovers if the price is not prohibitive.

I can buy new reproduction sidecovers for my XS650 @ $89 per pair. I think that is an acceptable price range. I'll search eBay for a very long time before I pay much more.

          What fits what

I have a XS1100SG that shares the same side covers as the XS1100SH. The XS1100SF wears something different. That covers the Specials. I won't pretend I know anything about the standard.

            Drill and Paint?

I'd be in considering the above for less than $75 for the pair.

BTW who was it here that was reproducing the emblems for the panels about 2-3 years ago. Did anything come out of that experiment?

If you made every mount style there would be, what, about 4 different molds that needed to be made? Then double that for right/left. If I were making 6-8 different molds, you could forget the $89 a pair. Universal keeps the cost down. Drilling holes and cutting slots in plastic sounds easy enough to me. Not to mention that it leaves the option for custom mounting with solid hardware (no more lost covers).

I just got the new rubber grommets in the mail from bike barn yesterday. Seems the stock rubber cone shaped grommets for the left side of my 80g have been discontinued, and replaced by another grommet. I tested the other grommets last night and they fit perfectly. Now both covers have the same mount and look symetrical. I will post the pictures when I get done painting the covers. If anyone knows another resource for the cone shaped grommets, please let me know.

                      Left side XS Special

I bought a black left side cover off a guy on here a few years back and just got around to opening the box and lo and behold, it's for the slot top mount that fits a different year. I need an '80SG cover. If anyone would like to trade or has one (or both) that need paint but has the 'Special" emblem please PM me.

Also, does anybody remember who was trying to make the molds for emblems I posted above?

hey guys, here are some pictures of the right side cover mount modifications, and the right side cover. If anyone is interested in making this modification, please let me know and I can explain how in more detail. It was very easy to do. Now if I can just figure out how to add the photos...

That's not bad actually. When you could get them from Yamaha they were pretty close to that, and plastic to boot. These are metal and gold plated, really much nicer than the originals, although they are a hair smaller because they shrink after pouring (it's a common problem, most stuff that is molded is done oversize to allow for shrinkage) since they are make by making a mold from an original that means the copy is a little smaller.

I would pretty much kill to get a pair of side covers made out of Carbon Fiber for my 79 Special. If they were the same shape and fit as the originals, I would be happy to pay $150 or so for the pair.
