Hey Just,
I'm pretty sure that some XJ owner's have done this, but they don't visit the site as often, as well as there aren't as many XJ owners as XS.
I have put a 110/90-19 on my 81SH, fit just fine, handles fine. Due to a old front end collision, and the dealer putting the wrong replacement fender on it, I had to grind the mounting holes a little wider to allow some tilting of the fender to keep it from rubbing the tire on the front edge at high speed!
The XJ has a built in forkbrace in the front fender, so there might not be as much side room as on my 81. You can measure the width inside the fender at it's narrowest, and then compare that to the tire specs width for the brand you are looking to get to see if the tire is not as wide!

That's the size I always run on my XJ.

I'd suppose the 10mm width change would make less difference than other changes; like changing a worn tire for a new one or a nasty tire for a nice one.
What might give problems is fender clearance. Although it's not a direct comparison, my son has a 110/90-19 on the front of his XS750 Special and there's mebbe 1/8" clearance between the tire and the fender.
Betcha he wouldn't get 50 yards up a rain-soaked dirt road before the wheel was mud-locked.Fred Hill, S'toon
