If everything is stock then when you turn the key on you should get tail light only. Then when you start the bike you should get the headlight. With key on bike not running your headlight will not be on.1979 xs1100 Special -

Burnt wire, grounding out, weak wire connection, corroded wire could be other possiabilities. Found mine when I looked in my wiring harness and seen a burnt piece of wire, grounding out against the frame when turning.Last edited by Brad; 04-15-2010, 09:53 PM.Some make 'em, most just make payments on 'em!

Hi guys,
what's supposed to happen is this:-
Turn the key and just the tail light comes on.
When the engine starts (more accurately, when the alternator starts making current) a relay turns the headlight on.
The relay locks so that the headlight stays on until the key is turned off even if the engine stalls or the alternator quits.
If either of the headlight filaments fail the RLU turns the white warning light on and switches to the other filament.
If it's the hi-beam burnt out the RLU simply switches to the lo-beam.
If it's the lo-beam burnt out the RLU switches to the hi-beam but at a reduced voltage.Fred Hill, S'toon
