Tripped over a 79 Standard last weekend.
The carbs have plastic caps on the idle screws.
Is that normal?
My SF had no such caps.
There was also about 1.5 gal of gas in the oil.
I dumped it and oiled the rings. It will turn over by hand with the kicker.
I'll put some fresh oil in and see what happens.

Deja vu all over again.

I have a the same on a set that I have so it's seems to be normal

The plastic caps were the "don't mess with the factory emissions settings" caps.

I suppose it could mean that they haven't been messed with.

ive never seen the caps over the mixture screws
before but arent they made from steel from the factory?
if thats the case the plastic ones
might be after market, i know some come in carb kits.

Id also be stripping the carbs down and cleaning them
before putting in fuel thru them, fuel in the engine
indicates leaking float needle and seats.

Hey Pete, here in the USA at least, the later model bikes, 80-82, the carbs had the mixture screw down in a tunnel that came from the factory with a metal cap over it to keep ifolks from killing the EPA set mixture. Well in 78-79, the mixture screw stood out of that tower and the knob to adjust it was on top of the tower. So they put a plastic cap on the screw so it could only be turned maybe 1/4 turn or so each way IIRC. Just like on the newer style carbs it is unusual at this date to find any with the cap instaled, so it is with the older style as most have had to replace those screws or adjust them much further by now.

Yeah, they will be gone in short order.
The carbs look slightly different compared to the Special; there is a rubber bung plug on the outside of the #1 carb body, that I am not used to seeing. That, along with the caps made me wonder if they were the stock units or not.
It mostly seems unmolested, still has the kicker! And the wires are minimally kludged. But it sure is dirty, pipes are blown out at the back, and the paint is M. Maroon turned to crap brown.
