  • save me from the damn octopus!

ok so iv been looking around for help on how to do this but i just dont get the lingo used in the threads "t's and such" i have a 1979 xs1100 special with the 4 selection petcocks and i misplaced the octy. was madly lookig for it untill i read i can totally bypass it. how do i do this? i see threads saying route one hose to the carbs but theres 2 inlets per pair of carbs. how do i route the hoses?? octo free please break it down for me i would search some more but i have a screaming baby to tend to thank you all!

    1. Cap off the front petcock outlets, left and right.
    2. Run fuel line from left petcock to lower right T.
    3. Run fuel line from right petcock to lower left T.
    4. Upper T's are vents, run either to air box nipples or leave open.
    5. Make sure all 4 front carb boots have vacuum caps on the nipples.

If you wish to run inline filters, splice them in the fuel lines.

More info in this thread, with diagrams.....

as a percaution, one might want to hold a small container under the petcocks with no hoses on them to make sure that they hadn't been taken off and put on the wrong side. just turn the petcock to "on" and cap the other one. if you cap the "on" accidentally instead, you will have no reserve.

Mr. Johnson has a good point. Verify which outlet is ON or PRIME. PRIME does leave no reserve when it runs out. Reserve is very good for the legs and the back!!!

Here is an alternate routing I have used on bothe of my 81 specials and had no issues at all (warning, this was drawn freehand in paint, not by an artist.)

The sketch assumes ON is rear which is how it should be if the petcocks were installed correctly. OBviously, the purple VENT lines only apply to the 79 Special or bikes where the older style carbs have been installed as replacements. HTH

Yeah do what bikerphil said.Just remember to turn the petcocks off when parked.Otherwise if you have a stuck float valve she might leak all over or fill the crankcase/trany full of gas.Semper Fi Terry

The image above shows a fuel filter on each line, where can I get these normally? Also does anyone what size of tubing should be used?

Should be 1/4" tubing. I bought two inline filters from a local bike shop that specializes in off road and quads.
