That would be an interesting piece of information to locate. I can't imagine anyone but the manufacturer would have that record though, tracking what serial numbers where shipped to what dealers. However, these bikes were sold before computer records were kept, so I doubt anyone has that information anymore.

    Good luck though!

My bike is a 1980 Midnight Special. Not trying brag, but apparently this was the showroom floor model back in the day. I noticed on the lower triple tree clamp there is a little plaque with a mans name on my bike, probably the first lucky owner of this fine machine. The name is "JR Westerdahl". So in case you are him, I have your bike. But your not getting it back sucka!
"The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

Now that is scary. And christ, records go back way further than comps.

That's true for some things, but most companies shred ALL records after a certain number of years (my company even automatically deletes all company emails over 5 years old). I would imagine this info would probably fall into that category of information...

I beg to differ, we are talking about vehicles here, not emails. Im not saying you could easily get the records, but I bet they are still around somewhere (not in cyberspace)

I don't get it. I swear I'd laugh, but it went over my head.

I've heard of some people getting a bike with the PO's SSN etched into all the removable parts on the bike. The idea was to identify it if it ever got stolen, and even after it was torn apart and sold as parts.

Might as well give the thief your identity too. Then they could proove they are you and haven't stolen the bike. I don't think I'll be doing that any time soon.

                            Origins

I bought my '80G from the original owner and it was bought right here in Palm Beach county. He even gave me the original bill of sale ($2.3K new) and title.
The J is of unknown origin, bought it in Port Saint Lucie, althought it would be interesting to trace it's meanderings before it got to me.

I do know this about my bike-I bought it at a dealer who also sold used bikes-He would not take just any trade in and only dealt with local people. When i picked up my bike he told me the guy couldn't make payments so that's how it ended there. He etched his social security # in some parts like the brake pedal so i could be curious and look it up but why bother?Besides his # is an old # and for all i know he could have died.
