  • late model master idle screw

Hi, Can anyone tell me a reasonable way to grip the master idle screw on the late model carbs without burning my hands on hot engine. My fingers dont quite reach it, from the side, and my pliers dont really work, Ive fit a socket on it and a five eighths almost catches the notches, but is shaky to use. Has anyone made a special tool to use for the idle adjustment or is it just a matter of finding a five year old kid and hoping his parents wont sue me for getting him burned. Let me know please.

haha, most people use a long flat head screwdriver... IDK if there is really an easier way...

I use my gauntlet style leather gloves. The leather on the fingers is fine enough I can feel and move the adjuster, but it is thick enough I don't get burned.

If you're clever, you can make a remote adjuster with a piece of a speedometer cable and a knob. Got them on both my early type carbs, I'm sure it could be done to those somehow.

Assming you have the tank off or on backwards for access. Then, I use a very long thin screwdriver I trimmed to fit those screws.

On a standard with the seat removed and the rear of the tank lifted, a long extension with a 15mm socket will do it. With the seat and tank in place, pushing the 'fins' from the side with a long bladed screwdriver works, as has been said.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

                  thanks guys

                  Hi,

I do have a spark plug wire puller, that if bent and modified within an inch of its life, may very well be able to do the job, just have to try that too. Will try the gloves and or rag and socket first though.

                  Thanks Tad

OOOPS!!! You mean THE idle screw, not the idle mixture screws.

On the later model carbs where it is on the engine side, I simply use a very long handled screw driver to push on the notches on either side of it as needed. Never had any burning issues.

this would do if you can find a socket that fits.

                        Hi Tad,
I write a post-it note to myself and stick it on the bike seat to remind me to set the screw up (or down) before the next ride while the engine is still cold.

I discovered that even the long screwdriver doesn't work if you have lowers on a fairing... They kinda get in the way.

HF has a sidewinder in 3/8, I will get that and use it if the rag glove etc methods dont work. Thanks
